What causes onychocryptosis? Some individuals have pincer nails. Pincer nails are basically toenails that naturally curl inwards. When you do not trim your nails properly, it could cause onychocryptosis. Most of the athletes and adolescents have soft skin and nails. When your nails are soft and prone to breakage, it could lead to ingrown toenails.

It may be a hereditary condition as well. It is best to treat the condition before it gets worse. Infected ingrown toenails cannot be treated at home.

There are several ways to deal with ingrown toenails. These are effective home remedies which require basic ingredients.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Take a cotton ball and dip it in unfiltered and raw apple cider vinegar. Place it on the affected area and cover it up with a bandage. Let it sit for two hours and then gently remove the bandage.

You can also add raw apple cider vinegar to your warm foot tub. Soak your toenails in the foot tub for 30 minutes. Do this once in a day!


Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. You can either purchase an ointment or antiseptic cream which has turmeric or you can mix mustard oil and turmeric to make a paste. Apply it to the affected area and the pain will vanish in a few days.

Epsom Salt

Add 1 tbsp of Epsom salt in a warm foot bath. Soak your foot in this foot bath for 30 minutes. Once you are done, you must dry your feet immediately. Do this thrice or four times a week.

Hydrogen Peroxide

This ingredient acts as a disinfectant and also helps in reducing the risk of getting an infection. If you want to get rid of the pains caused by ingrown toenails then add ½ cup hydrogen peroxide to a warm foot bath. Soak the affected toenails for about 30 minutes. You can do this four times a week.

Cotton Wedge

After the warm water foot bath, you must dry your foot and place a cotton wedge under the affected toenails. How does this help? This way the nail will grow above the skin and it will also help in reducing the pain. It is one of the most effective home treatments for ingrown toenails.
